Project Summary

The City of Boston was among the first in the nation to commit to eliminating fatal and severe traffic crashes using a Vision Zero approach. The City worked with Toole Design’s nationally-renowned researchers and local engineers and planners to draft a pioneering, data-driven Action Plan to achieve this ambitious goal by 2030. Carefully balancing rapid-response projects with long-term systemic change, the Action Plan focused the City’s resources and existing programs – including Complete Streets, the Boston Bike Network and Neighborhood Slow Streets – on proven safety countermeasures to reduce speeds and improve safety for all road users. Toole Design continues to assist the City by quickly implementing intersection and corridor safety projects through an on-call contract. This comprehensive approach across planning and design is working; fatal crashes in the City were down by 30% in 2017.
