Project Summary

The popular 28-mile Anacostia River Trail system in Washington, DC connects to wide variety of destinations in the heart of the nation’s capital. Working with the District Department of Transportation, Toole Design provided construction phase services – applying our broad knowledge of trail design, materials, and constructability issues – for trails that are enjoyed year-round by residents and visitors alike.

Additionally, Toole Design worked with the National Park Service to provide a comprehensive, user-friendly wayfinding system that identifies logical routes, and ensures users can easily find their way along the trail system and to nearby destinations.  Our role started with the initial concept design and continued through final design and construction of the wayfinding system and associated trail amenities. Today, trail users enjoy unrivalled access to educational, cultural, and recreational resources on both sides of the Anacostia River.
