A mix of Capitol Hill and Near Southeast residents, and institutional representatives gathered at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Social Hall to learn about existing conditions in the project area and what the possibilities might be for improvements. After presentations from the DDOT Consultant Team, participants divided into six small groups to develop ideas around particular aspects of the project. Members of the Consultant Team guided each group. The meeting closed with each breakout group reporting its ideas back to the full gathering.
Each Breakout group was tasked with a central challenge. For example, the Bicycling and Walking group was asked to: “Determine what physical changes should be made to facilitate movement through the park from 1st and 2nd Streets, under the freeway and down to Canal Park.”
Other groups addressed how to best use the area under the freeway, integrate public art into the project, develop a streetscape design to visually link the two parks, and integrate history into the project.
Public input was also gathered by asking participants to mark on maps and comment on 3” x 5” cards. These methods gathered input about 1) what routes people currently use to bike and walk through the project area, 2) places where people gather, and 3) the last three things one did in Garfield Park.
