TRANSIT COOPERATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM
SYNTHESIS 62: INTEGRATION OF BICYCLES AND TRANSIT

Project Description
Toole Design Group (TDG) served as the principal investigator for the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis 62: Integration of Bicycles and Transit. This synthesis report summarized bicycle accommodation provided by transit agencies in North America, including bicycle on bus, bicycle on rail, bicycle on vanpool, bicycle on ferry, bicycle parking, and other emerging services. To gather first-hand data from transit agencies, TDG developed, distributed, and analyzed an online questionnaire. Forty-five of the 56 agencies that responded to the questionnaire had developed at least one of their bicycle services after 1994, indicating the growth and diversification of bicycle and transit integration over a 10-year period.
TDG used the transit agency feedback to present the benefits of bicycle and transit integration, user characteristics, customer satisfaction, maintenance challenges, monitoring and benchmarking, and promotion of bicycle services. TDG also documented emerging trends in the synthesis report, such as installing 3-bike racks on the front of buses, utilizing automated bicycle counters, and developing staffed bicycle facilities.
The questionnaire and synthesis report development process included close coordination with a review panel of transit agency representatives, bicycle advocates, State DOT staff, Federal Transit Administration staff, and Transportation Research Board staff.
