MARYLAND SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS PROGRAM

Project Description
Toole Design Group (TDG) developed Maryland’s Pilot Safe Routes to School Program. Under the direction of the Maryland State Legislature and Maryland Department of Transportation, TDG initiated a program which included: 1) the creation of a Safe Routes to School Guidebook for parents, teachers and administrators; 2) the development of an action plan for two pilot schools in the City of Baltimore and Montgomery County, and 3) post evaluation of the program.

At each pilot school, TDG worked closely with local School Traffic Safety Teams of parents, teachers, and officials. Community outreach included neighborhood site audits, a logo contest for students, community workshops, Walk-to-School Day events, and targeted outreach to the Hispanic community in Montgomery County. The Safe Routes to Schools Action Plan received high praise, and was the basis for implementing physical improvements as well as new safety programs at both schools.
