UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY - LEXINGTON, KY
CAMPUS BICYCLE PLAN

Project Description
Toole Design Group completed a Campus Bicycle Master Plan for the University of Kentucky. The goal of the study was to improve the safety and mobility of students, faculty and staff, and to encourage higher levels of bicycle travel on campus.
Toole Design Group was successful in gathering extensive public participation using an online survey to collect opinions from more than 10% of the campus community. Several workshops and meetings were held to present findings and gather input from key University of Kentucky administrators, the bicycle advisory committee, students, employees and local residents.
The final plan consists of a bicycle route network of on-road bicycle lanes and routes, in addition to an off-road pathway system to help bicyclists navigate through campus and into adjacent neighborhoods. The plan also presents recommendations for facility improvements including bicycle parking, a signage system, intersection crossing improvements, and cross sections for proposed roadway configurations. The plan presents program and policy recommendations including program funding and coordination, a revised motor vehicle parking permit strategy, and incentive programs to increase bicycling. Finally, TDG prepared a transportation information guide for students which addresses all modes of travel with an emphasis on encouraging bicycling and waking.
