FHWA PEDESTRIAN AND BICYCLE
DATA COLLECTION CASE STUDIES REPORT

Project Description
Toole Design Group (TDG) worked for the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center on a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) project to document different types of pedestrian and bicycle data collection methods used throughout the United States. Over 50 different communities were contacted to determine how they collect and disseminate data on pedestrian and bicycle use and facilities. Twenty-nine data collection efforts were profiled as detailed case studies. These case studies provide information about leading data collection efforts in the broad categories of documenting use, conducting surveys, and inventorying facilities. Each case study includes sections about the history and purpose of the data collection effort, details of the methodology, innovations and accomplishments, and lessons learned from the experience.

TDG contacted and interviewed agency representatives, selected and drafted case studies, gathered graphics, solicited local reviews of the draft case studies, and submitted the initial drafts to FHWA within a five-month period. TDG also prepared a final report that synthesized the information from the case study communities, summarized current practices, and suggested ways to improve pedestrian and bicycle data collection in the United States. The report is available on the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center website: http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/rd/planning.htm#data.
