INNER HARBOR SHARED USE TRAIL CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Project Description
Toole Design Group developed a design plan for a multi-use trail that will encircle Baltimore's Inner Harbor, forming a continuous connection between the Jones Falls and the Gwynns Falls Greenways. These two trails will converge on the Inner Harbor from the north (along the Jones Falls) and south (via Federal Hill) respectively. Ultimately, this connection will form a key link in the East Coast Greenway, a proposed 2,600 mile trail linking East Coast cities from Maine to Florida.
The project involved extensive analysis of pedestrian and bicycle travel patterns along and within the Inner Harbor, as well as motor vehicle parking and access along the trolley lane and adjacent loading docks, and bus drop-off lanes. Toole Design Group analyzed the tourism and transportation potential of this project, and developed design concepts for locations with major pedestrian flows. The concept plan was endorsed by business leaders and tourism officials in Baltimore, and is now moving forward into the design and implementation phase.
