ANACOSTIA RIVERWALK TRAIL DESIGN

Project Description
The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail (ART) is a sixteen-mile system of trails along the shorelines of the Anacostia River and the Washington Channel, in Washington, D.C. The ART is a feature element of Mayor Anthony William’s Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, an urban revitalization plan developed in partnership with numerous federal agencies located along the river.

As a subconsultant to TY Lin International, Toole Design Group (TDG) provided trail design expertise for the development of construction drawings for the first phase of trail construction, a five million dollar project. TDG’s involvement included developing 65% design plans for eight trail connectors to surrounding neighborhoods. TDG developed plan and profile designs for the trail connections, curb extensions at intersections, trail and driveway intersection details, pavement marking and signing plans. TDG acted as a project team reviewer for the entire construction documents package to provide total project quality control. TDG assisted TY Lin with interagency coordination and design of a comprehensive wayfinding and historic/cultural sign program. TDG also developed an extensive interpretive sign program to educate the public about the heritage of Washington’s “second” river.
