ADAMS MORGAN NEIGHBORHOOD
MULTIMODAL SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CONCEPTUAL PLAN

Project Description
Toole Design Group (TDG) developed two intersection improvement concepts to provide alternatives to an existing automobile-oriented improvement scheme proposed by DDOT. TDG analyzed the multi-modal performance of the intersection placing an emphasis improving the safety of the intersection operation to balance the needs of motor vehicles, buses, pedestrians, bicyclists, business patrons, and residents. TDG analyzed pedestrian facilities including signals, pushbuttons, crossing distances, timing, curb ramps, refuges, bus stops, and sidewalks. TDG examined vehicular lanes to assess motor vehicle operation on each approach with an emphasis on the interaction of transit buses at bus stops with other traffic modes. Additionally, TDG analyzed parking, streetscape, driveway access, bicycle operation, and taxi cab operation to develop a complete, multi-modal improvement plan.

The final design concepts provided options that would involve a variety of physical changes including: new sign and pavement markings, sidewalk widening, ADA improvements, shortened and improved pedestrian crossings, improved pedestrian refuge, bus stop relocations, bus bulb extensions, signal timing changes, parking modifications, curb extensions, lighting improvements, and landscaping improvements. Full color renderings were developed to illustrate recommended changes, and to facilitate safety and cost tradeoff discussions between DDOT officials, ANC officials, business owners, and residents at various public and invited meetings. The project has now moved forward to the design phase.
